[God]is able to do all things more abundantly than we desire orunderstand, according to the power that worketh in us. - Ephesians3.20
ALMIGHTYand everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we are topray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve:Pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy; forgiving us thosethings whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those goodthings which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits andmediation of Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord. Amen. - Collect for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

"Delight thyself also in the LORD, and he will give thee the desire of thine heart." - Psalm 37.4.
The Scripture verse above, and the collect from the Book of Common Prayer tell us that God wants to bless us beyond our desires. If we can let go, and focus on God, his purpose for us will unfold. He knows our hearts better than we do.
We pray for things we need and want. Sometimes, our prayers seem unanswered. Sometimes, there is a necessary rebuke issued against things like the prosperity gospel. The Bible does warn us against praying for things we will just spend on our passions (James 4.3). But often people are praying for needs. Financial needs, needs for love from another human being. I don't think it is particularly selfish or indulgent to pray for a lover when you are lonely, or for your basic needs when you can't pay your rent or mortgage. Life can be stressful.
The Psalmist says, "I cry to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me." - Psalm 57.2, RSV.
God does have a purpose for us, "to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29.11)." I like "purpose" more than "plan." Purpose seems more open-ended to me, plan seems too scripted. It sounds like white guy rational stuff. I think God's purpose for us unfolds, things fall into place.
If our hearts are open, he can answer our prayers, meet our needs, and fulfill our desires in a more wonderful and satisfying way than we can imagine. Things, I believe, will fall into place. Doors will open. Connections will be made. People will come into our lives at the right time.  If we invest too much in our conception of what our answered prayers look like, we may unwittingly limit God.
Let God unfold it, let it "happen." I believe when we do this, we will find God satisfying our needs and desires beyond our dreams.
